The neobiota destroying our continent
Frans Vandenbosch 方腾波 03/08/2026

Europe is being invaded. Not by armies, and not by the outsiders that national leaders so conveniently scapegoat. The invasion that matters is quieter than that and it has already reached every university, newsroom and parliament on the European continent.
The invasion’s first casualties are Russian gas, a hollowed-out steel and automotive sector and an industrial manufacturing base in full retreat. Manufacturing was always the base of the welfare state and that base is cracking. Social cohesion is fraying. Democracy has become theatre. The media no longer serve their own public, they manage it. Financially, European capital is quietly leaving. Morally, Europe has lost the confidence to name any of this plainly.
Not prophets of doom, just arithmetic
Some people who say this out loud get called prophets of doom. I want to push back on that phrase, even though I am borrowing it to reject it. A prophet of doom predicts disaster from imagination or dogma.
The people naming Europe’s decline today are not doing that. They are reading published trade figures, industrial output data and election results. That is not prophecy, it is arithmetic. Calling it doom-mongering is itself a way of avoiding the arithmetic.
Jan Oberg, of the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, has written that the situation is serious and that we should say so clearly, while still refusing despair (thetransnational.substack.com/p/tff-pressinfo-786-we-repeat-that). I agree with the first half completely. Naming a wound accurately is not the same as declaring the patient dead.
Not us, said the people opening the gate
Gordon Dumoulin, writing on Chinese affairs, has named the deeper habit with more precision. His essay “De Europa shock, niet wij” describes how European politicians explain every crisis as something done to them, never as something they chose (chinabeschouwing.substack.com/p/de-europa-shock-niet-wij). Not us, they say, about the gas, the factories, the war, the mood in their own streets. Dumoulin’s point, and he is right, is sharper than that: these politicians are not confused. They are performing confusion, knowingly, to hide their own hand. They blame Moscow, they blame Beijing, they occasionally blame their own voters, but they never once blame the USA or themselves. And while they perform that blame in public, in private many of them have spent two decades helping American money and American institutions plant exactly what is now destroying the continent they claim to defend. Not us, said the people quietly opening the gate.
A species with no natural predator
Here is how the gate got opened. Ecologists have a term, neobiota, for a species introduced into an environment where it did not evolve, and where nothing has adapted to check it. An invasive plant does not need to be stronger than the natives to take over. It only needs an environment with no natural predator, no competing root system, no resistance built up over generations. And, obviously, enough money behind the planting.
Take Common Ragweed, Giant Goldenrod and Large-leaved Lupine: all three originated in North America and have since invaded large tracts of Europe. Common Ragweed saturates the summer air with asthma‑triggering pollen wherever it colonises, while Goldenrod and Lupine form dense, shoulder‑high thickets that can slash native plant diversity by half within a few seasons. These plants came as ornamental garden plants, fodder crops, or accidental hitchhikers in cargo. Their ecological triumph is not a sign of superior strength, but a simple case of absence of resistance, a gap that local European species never had reason to defend against.
Woke politics, gender ideology and the identity based grievance culture now running through European universities are exactly that. None of them evolved on this continent. Each was manufactured in the United States, funded into existence and exported to Europe as though it were a universal truth rather than one country’s export product.
Where the seeds were grown
The word woke itself began in the 1940s as African American vernacular, a private warning to stay alert to racism. It became a national slogan after the killing of Michael Brown in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020. Political correctness has an even more precise birth certificate, coined in 1975 by Karen DeCrow, then president of the American National Organisation for Women. Gender ideology, as taught today in European sociology and gender studies departments, traces almost entirely to American university theory from the same decades, built for American legal and campus disputes, then repackaged as continental European curriculum. Diversity, equity and inclusion, DEI, followed the identical path from American corporate law into European human resources departments. The Great Replacement is organised by Soros and other villains. None of these grew from European soil. Each was built for specific American conditions, then sold abroad as though geography did not matter. None of these neobiota came from China or Russia.
A war paid for in Brussels
The war against Russia belongs on the same list, though it wears a different uniform. The decision to cut Europe off from Russian energy was not forced on Brussels by Moscow, it was a political choice Brussels made under heavy American pressure, and American liquefied gas filled the gap at several times the price. Chinese analysts have noted plainly that European heavy industry built its competitiveness on cheap Russian gas and that sanctions imposed largely to serve Washington’s strategic interest have driven European firms to cut output or relocate abroad. The main beneficiary of the whole episode was not Kyiv. It was Washington’s own oligarchs, energy exporters and defence contractors.
Washington’s own confession
There is a genuinely striking irony worth putting at the centre of all this. The United States government’s own National Security Strategy, published in December 2025, blames Europe’s embrace of political correctness for pushing the continent toward what the report itself calls civilisational erasure within twenty years. The same report states that Washington intends to cultivate resistance forces inside European countries against Europe’s own present trajectory. Read that twice. Washington seeded the ideology, financed its spread, now condemns Europe for hosting it, and proposes to intervene again to treat the damage. That is not a foreign power rescuing a victim. That is a supplier diagnosing an addiction it created, then selling the cure, while European politicians hold the door open for round two.
How the planting was financed
None of this required a hidden hand or a single name. The actual mechanism is published and unglamorous. American state instruments such as the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), OSF (Open Society Foundations) and USAID have funded civil society and academic programming across Europe for decades, openly, in annual reports anyone can read. American philanthropic foundations fund university departments, media fellowships and non governmental organisations that carry these frameworks with them, also openly. American technology platforms, whose content moderation and recommendation systems are trained on American cultural assumptions, carried the deceptive morals into every European phone. This is not a conspiracy. It is a documented export industry; Europe’s own leaders signed the import licence.
Francis Fukuyama (not my friend, read A chronicle of being wrong) an American scholar has written that identity politics pushed to its extreme end fragments a society into groups too narrow to deliberate together. If that diagnosis holds for the country that produced the ideology, it holds at least as strongly for the continent that imported it with no resistance built up at all and with its own politicians holding the gate.
The invasion you were not expecting
That is the invasion this article is actually about. Not the one you were expecting from the title. The gate was opened from the inside, by people paid, flattered, threatened, bribed or simply persuaded that what came through it was progress. Europe has spent thirty years asking who did this to us, when the sharper question was always who let it in, and why. Until Europe asks that question honestly, it will keep calling the people who answer it prophets of doom, when they are only the ones still counting.
