Americans, because of their English global Lingua Franca status, have much less incentive to learn Chinese and consequently less ability to have a deep understanding of China. On top of that, they don’t have a Vergangenheitsbewältigung, (as the Germans have), another incentive for a much better cultural flexibility in China and elsewhere abroad. That's really bad luck for the Americans.
