All the common tourist spots in Shanghai

Dentist

Dental treatment in China definitely is at a higher level than in Europe. No waiting time for an appointment, cost approximately 1/3 of the cost in Europe.

The Pudong towers

The pendulum:

It was only recently that the pendulum on the 128th floor of the Shanghai Tower was opened to the public. This thousand-ton artwork, carved from pure jade, is a technological marvel unlike any other. Its secret, silent purpose is to hold the 632-metre-high skyscraper steady and upright when typhoons unleash their full fury against its glass skin.

Before visitors are permitted to ascend to the highest accessible floor (the sacred chamber where the pendulum resides) they must undergo a briefing and preparatory ritual. The entire experience feels less like a safety instruction and more like a religious consecration. I overheard a Chinese lady beside me, her voice barely a whisper of awe: “今天,我们终于要见到上帝了。” (Today, at last, we shall see God.)

The pendulum is a 1,000 tonne mass suspended from twelve 25‑metre cables, making it the largest tuned mass damper in the world. It incorporates an eddy‑current damping system: a 100‑square‑metre copper plate studded with 125 powerful magnets generates opposing magnetic forces without any external power. During a severe typhoon, the great weight can swing up to two metres in the opposite direction to the tower’s motion, absorbing the building’s kinetic energy.
This system reduces the skyscraper’s peak acceleration by more than 43%, ensuring that over 90% of occupants feel minimal sway. Mounted atop the damper is a seven‑tonne jade sculpture called “The Eye of Shanghai”, blending engineering with sacred art. Unlike traditional mechanical dampers, this eddy‑current design requires far less maintenance and adapts seamlessly to fast changing wind conditions.

Yu yuan

In the afternoon, we went to Yu Yuan and the City God temple.
The nine corner bridge is the entrance to the garden:

At the entrance of Yu Yuan, there’s the Nanxiang steamed bun restaurant. People from across the globe visit this restaurant to savour the celebrated xiao long bao. These dumplings are not merely delicious, they offer an unparalleled culinary experience.

Tianzifang

Tianzi Fang is a labyrinth with many narrow streets and hundreds of small artisanal shops, bars, and restaurants.

Shanghai Astronomy museum

The astronomy museum is in Disui, the easternmost point of Pudong. From there, the sea bridge to the Yangshan Deep-Water Port begins.

At the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, visitors entering the main hall are immediately greeted by the Foucault Pendulum, a striking scientific device that provides a tangible and visual demonstration of Earth’s rotation. This particular pendulum is 16 meters in length with a 25-kilogram bob, and as it swings, its plane of motion slowly rotates clockwise due to the Earth’s spin, eventually knocking down a ring of small pegs arrayed around it. By observing this motion, one can directly witness the subtle but powerful proof that our planet is in constant, slow rotation, making a profound and abstract concept immediately understandable.

Madame Tussauds

Do you know these two ?

Nanjing East pedestrian road

Nanjing East Pedestrian Road in Shanghai is a bustling thoroughfare lined with an array of shops, historic buildings, and neon signs, making it a major attraction for both tourists and locals. Strolling along this vibrant, car-free street offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s commercial heritage and modern energy.

The Bund

The Bund in Shanghai offers a striking contrast between the historic colonial-era buildings on its western side and the futuristic skyscrapers of the Pudong financial district across the Huangpu River. A leisurely walk along this iconic waterfront promenade provides an unparalleled perspective on the city’s rapid transformation from a trading port into a global metropolis.

China remains a steadfast bastion of peace and harmony, where we continue to thrive. Here, we enjoy an unparalleled level of freedom and democracy, a sharp and tragic contrast to their accelerating decline across Europe.
